US vs. Israeli Bedding Sizes - A Guide for the Perplexed
For many American expats living in Israel, shopping for bedding can be unexpectedly tricky. Standard sizes differ from what you might be used to back in the Old Country, and finding the right size fitted sheets and blankets for your bed can feel like a guessing game. Since you’re shopping for sheets and blankets that fit just right, we’ve written a short guide to help you understand how Israeli sizes stack up against the US measurements you are more familiar with. This comparison can help you navigate our website and shop online with confidence.
The smaller sized Israeli beds are narrower and longer than their US counterparts, while the larger sizes have similar lengths with varying widths. This makes the matching sheets different in size. In addition, blankets are designed to be larger than beds in order to provide adequate coverage for the mattress and tuck-in space.
Blankets are much wider than the bed, so they can drape over the sides of the bed and ensure enough coverage for the sleeper. They are also longer than the bed so they can provide coverage at the foot of the bed, even with tucking. The blanket’s larger dimensions accommodate the bed's depth, provide warmth, and allow flexibility in how the blanket is used. The different bed sizes also translate into differences in the blanket size between countries.
To give you an actual example of the bed and bedding size differences, an Israeli standard bed measures around 36 x 79 in (90 x 200 cm), while the nearest US size that is comparable is twin, which measures 38 x 75 in (97 x 190 cm). The matching blankets, therefore, differ as well. The Israeli standard blanket measures 59 x 79 in (150 x 200 cm), while its US counterpart measures 68 x 86 in (172 x 218 cm). For additional bed size comparisons, see the table below.
Given all of this, it should be clear that bedding for Israeli beds is not a good match for US beds, and vice versa. Imagine trying to get an American fitted sheet on an Israeli bed or trying to cover an Israeli blanket with a US duvet cover - definitely an awkward fit!
At Israel Home Store, we have you covered (pun intended!) from both ends. If you have Israeli size beds, most of our site will attend to your needs. However, if you moved to Israel with your US sized mattresses, we also offer an exclusive collection of US-sized blankets and sheets to fit.
